Papers, 1820-1928 (bulk 1842-1928).

Primarily the papers of John Henry Hankins (1804-1870) and his wife, Louisiana (Wilson) Hankins (1819-1865), of Surry County, Va., and their children. John's papers include correspondence, 1842-1869, with his children, and household accounts, 1854-1861. Louisiana's correspondence, 1857-1864, with her children, James DeWitt Hankins (1841-1866) and Virginia Wilson Hankins (1843-1888), include observations on the Civil War homefront. Virginia's papers include a diary, 1863; correspondence, 1862- 1888, primarily with her brother Louis Hankins; and personal accounts, 1881-1888, kept as a teacher in Norfolk, Va. Louis worked as a civil engineer throughout the South and briefly in Nicaragua in 1898. His correspondence, 1878-1928, primarily with his sister, Mary Dorcas (Hankins) Fontaine (b. 1863), includes some discussion of his life there. A few papers pertain to other family members.
